Backround: Been working as a Grocery clerk for the past 2 years on a 4am-12:30 shift, the past 4 months have been 3am-11:30. The jobs failed to provide any advancement and the wage increases via our union failed to meet inflation and/or minimum wage increases until just recently.
As it sits im making $ 0.75 above minimum wage while being the second most senior within the department and hailed as one of our best employees. With the virus the pressure from customers has gone up exponentially, the entitlement is mind boggling. Along with that our jobs have expanded to various other tasks such as being pretend police watching the door for mask violations and counting customers.(more customer service) Employees quitting and not showing up for work has become common and those that do show up are forced to fill the gaps, overtime is off the table though so just work faster.
Ive reached a breaking point where its unsustainable mentally, if this keeps up im gonna end up screaming at someone for no reason. Ive burnt out, with no way to take a leave beyond my pto the only option was quitting.
Being a dead end job its not a huge loss, and I’ve got a saving to hold me over for quite a while. I intent to do a bit of driving around the PNW to unwind with a month or so of no job.

Start a YouTube channel... It will fill your days with joy, and people will love seeing that Z resurrected
over time! Realistically it won’t replace any dayjob (believe me, I’ve tried and failed) but it can turn into a legitimate side-gig
if you put in the time! And perhaps you’ll get lucky and make it big.

T hat was my very first job, at a Trade well’s - taught me a few lessons, but absolutely not something to do for very long, (especially now with all the covid19 BS...) I will never forget the “joy” of cleaning the butcher’s grease traps... but smashing all the cardboard into big bales using the hydraulic press thing was kinda fun.

The Z will cover bills for a little while, maybe pick up some part time work elsewhere for savings.
In all honestly youtube is already full of good content, I might make videos to showcase some work but nothing in an effort to build a channel.

Sorry to hear how tough things have been recently, but I think you’ve made the right choice. Unless you could get into a managerial position that is not the sort of job you want to keep for all that long. I unfortunately don’t have much advice for you but we’re here for the occasional rant if you so wish. Good luck.

I’m a quiet, introverted guy. When I started
yelling at people, that was a sign my job was not good for my mental health.

I hope you burned through your PTO first.
Anything in particular you're going to look for?
USPS might not have a great long-term outlook, but short term the pay and benefits are fantastic and they need people. Might be worth trying

The great stuff is that you don’t have to build a channel. I was in the “Must build a channel” mode when I first started back in 2012-2013
. After a few years I just gave up on that dream after nearly quitting
. Obviously I didn’t, I just needed a new perspective. I looked back at the cars I had reviewed at the time and said: Why would I ever stop? This is awesome!
I need to stop pushing content.
This
isn’t going anywhere, I am not 100K youtuber material or else I would have been there already
.
Now I just shoot what I want to shoot and release videos when I can (which usually means about 1-3
a month) with no set schedule. I got goals
like hitting 10K subscribers and get a car video to 1 million views. But they are soft goals. I have had the 10K subscriber goal for years. It’s just something I want to hit. 100K? I doubt that will ever happen. I am going to be very happy with 10K.
Man, I am rambling. Don’t mind me!

Mos t careers are out of grasp so, hardware stores, forklift driver/ warehouse work, costco. There are a few distribution centers here for mail so that will probably be looked at.
Potentially see if any bodyshops are looking for an apprentice

Automotive repair is a decent field. My friend owns a shop and has a difficult time attracting newbies who will stick around. He pays for their certification training. In particular, in my immediate area, there is a need for alignment technicians.
A dead end job can be tolerable if you like what’s in the cul de sac. I’m a teacher, so I’ll earn the same as everybody else, I’ll never receive a promotion and nobody will ever tap me on the shoulder and suggest that I apply for some new opportunity.

Sounds like you just made an amazing decision, good luck. I do not miss working retail 1 tiny bit. The short staffing, lack of progression, and INSANE entitlement had me completely exhausted.

Being paid 0.75 above minimum is a joke. Our local grocery Starts at $12/hr and most even the teenagers are over $15.

An apprenticeship or trade school would be an excellent way to learn what you need to know to make a good living. Welders, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC techs are always in demand. They can be dirty jobs, but they pay well. Mike Rowe has an interesting perspective on the job market and how you can get ahead in life. I come from a long line of tradespeople who all made a good living. I can attest that you don’t need a degree to be successful and you don’t have to be stuck in a dead-end job.

Being a tech is a hard sell, did if for a little while when I was younger and took a year of technical school.
Having to own at least 10k in tools, constant time crunch, combined with liability makes it unattractive. I here some German repair shops don't pay flat rate, so there's less time crunch which is nice

I worked in a Walmart TLE for a year and a half, which was not a fun job. I moved after my father passed away, and Walmart never accepted my request to be transferred. Today over 2 years after I stopped working there, I got a call to come in for a shift(I haven’t set be my voicemail after switching carriers, but they called 10 mins before the afternoon shift starts.)

That’ s one way to put it. I actually held a Pharmacy Technician license for a while, as well as worked the front end and photo lab. My eyes have been opened to not only retail corporations, but the whole pharmaceutical business and insurance business.
No one has any idea why they are taking any of their medications, no one knows their insurance info, no one understands co-pays or deductibles, and EVERYONE thinks a pharmacy is like a fast-food make-line. It was scary and frustrating most times, and heartbreaking to see good people unable to afford basic life-saving medication.
I used to answer the pharmacy drive thru with “Welcome to W endy’s, how can I take your order?” I never had a single person notice or laugh, just reply “IM HERE TO PICK UP” a nd then sit in silence and not provide me a name.
I’ m having flashbacks and my blood pressure is rising remembering all this, sorry for the rant.

I’d look at a gig as a HVAC technician . The world is begging for people that can show up to work and fix things. Trust me, from looking at your shop picture , i’d say y ou are well qualified for HVAC . And i f you are good with computers, you can work in controls which is even a better gig. All you would need is some trade school to learn the basics of the job such a brazing etc.
I have worked with Trane mechanics for years. Every one was engaged and interested in their work. Commercial service is a good, well paying job . Like plumbers, people will always need their air conditioning installed or fixed.

It sounds like you made a good move, and I wish you good luck on the search. Moving on when the time calls will pay dividends. Staying in something that isn’t what you want and that isn’t leading to bigger things never pays off.
I’ve changed career fields a couple of times, and s ometimes in ways that I could’ve never predicted beforehand. Keep an eye out and an open mind on the job search, and you might be surprised what comes your way.
